‘Research by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) and AMP says mothers on minimum wage may only keep a fraction of their earnings, with some effectively working for just $3.50 an hour.’
Whilst paying for child care is the responsibility of both parents as a result of the gender pay gap and societal expectations of women taking on caring roles it is often the women who doesn’t return to work if child care is considered too expensive. This has a negative impact on the women’s life long earning capacity and ability to maintain a successful and fulfilling career. Both factors that see women more vulnerable to poverty.
